Where do I stay in Cairo?

The wedding will take place at Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile. It’s a beautiful part of the city in downtown Cairo that is right by the Nile river. Cairo has a lot of hotel options ranging in prices, but if you have a lower budget there is also the option of Airbnb. We would recommend against staying by the pyramids (i.e. Giza) as it would be a bit far from the hotel venue and most of Cairo’s attractions (and us).

We’re currently trying to arrange some Airbnb’s for everyone through some people we know, and that way you could transfer the money to us directly and we’d guarantee the location and quality of the place, but otherwise, here are some recommendations for where to stay:

Downtown Cairo

Tahrir, Garden City, and Zamalek are pretty good locations for an Airbnb or a hotel. They’re very central, close to the wedding venue, you could walk around (within the district), and there’s lots to see in terms of attractions and historical sites. Feel free to send the options you find to Yara and she can check if it’s good.

New Cairo

Keep in mind that Cairo is massive, so we usually consider a 20–30min drive as short. We’ll be staying in New Cairo (except for 3–5 April, we’ll be at the hotel), and there you could find affordable, safe, and pretty neat Airbnb options. However, this part of Cairo is more of a compound/gated communities kind of thing with food complexes and malls – not ideal if you want to go for a walk or discover the city by foot.

How do I get around?

Ubers (not taxis)! They’re very cheap (~2 euros for a 15–30 minute ride). Uber also has an "Uber X comfort" for 50 cents more which we recommend. Another great app is inDrive which lets you set your own price. London Cab is good from and to the airport.

Can I bring an extra friend who's not on the invite list?

As much as we’d love to accommodate everyone, we have limited capacity at the venue. If we have not already invited your plus one and you’d really like them to come, please reach out to us so we can send them an RSVP link.

Will alcohol be served?

We will be respecting the cultural values of the city and the rules of the hotel and so alcohol will not be served at the venue, but trust us, you won’t need alcohol to enjoy this wedding. You may be allowed to purchase alcohol at the venue from the bar or from shops in Cairo. Note: Drugs (including weed) are illegal in Egypt.

How do wedding gifts work?

Please don’t stress about getting us a gift! We’re happy to just have you there

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

It depends! Please check online for up to date information regarding visa requirements for Egypt. And please don’t just ask ChatGPT, it has no idea.

How much cash should I carry with me?

You can pay with card at most places in Egypt, but cash will be necessary at places like street markets, taking a taxi without an app, smaller grocery stores, etc. We recommend having 1500EGP (~25 euros) on you.

What will the weather be like?

Wonderful! It should be around 26 degrees (Celsius) during the day and around 18–20 degrees in the evening. We will provide blankets at the wedding if needed.
